I understand if after the last "cocktail" recipe I posted, you didn't trust that this would actually be a recipe, but fear not - it is.

Winter is still in full force in Chicago, and even though we made it through the worst, our furnace definitely stopped working one night. So we packed up Luce and headed to the cheapest hotel that took pets and spent the night watching hotel cable and eating pizza. It was funny, because we felt like we should be pissed and frustrated, but it kind of fun. Here we were, in a hotel in our own city, on a work night, just kickin it. It was kind of fun to sleep in a different neighborhood for a change. Plus, look at this adorable bathroom it had!

It was an old building, that almost looked like apartments, that had not been renovated in aaaages, so this was definitely not an attempt at charming vintage, it was just the original seafoam tiles, hanging out long enough to come back in style once more.

Anyways! The cocktail! It's really easy:

1.) Take a small pat of butter (I used about 1/10 of a stick) and put it in the bottom of your glass.
2.) Sprinkle on one teaspoon of brown sugar, and one teaspoon of cinnamon.
3.) Fill 3/4 of the glass with apple cider and microwave for 15 seconds, or until warm. This will mostly melt the butter, but give it a quick stir to finish it off and give it that nice froth.
4.) Pour in rum to taste. Start with 2oz, adjust for how broken your furnace is.

  1. I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one dealing with this frozen tundra and all her maintenance magic by just getting drunk. When our heat when out during PV Part 1, we made a LOT of drinks and swaddled ourselves in blankets.

  2. We lost heat on a particularly cold night here and my boyfriend was NOT a fan of the "vacation in our own city" idea. We ended the night angry and cold and I fell asleep in full winter garb (hat, multiple sweatshirts, scarf, gloves...). If it happens again I'm going by myself haha

In other news- Love that mug!

  3. Oh wow! There are boozy cocktails with butter in them!?! How have I not known this?

  4. This sounds so good! I'm sorry your heat went out, but your stay in that cute hotel sounds like it made it totally worth it. I hope the heater is back in order and you're staying warm!

  5. I would like to add that this recipe also works without the rum if you are so inclined - drinking the virgin version right now… :) (It is a Tuesday night, after all!)
