Radical Possibility, Lately

Okay, so even though I've been doing those Five Minute Sketches, I'm still a shitty blogger and my creativity has not returned. It's just been a really hard summer, personally. But this isn't the kind of blog where I talk too much about my personal life or feelings, mostly because I don't talk about my feelings in real life either. But just to keep things fresh around here, let's do a little episode of Radical Possibility, Lately.

I've had weddings galore lately. For some, I'm just a date and have never met the couple, for others, I am in the wedding (as seen in the one above), and in a new adventure, for some I am planning it. In taking a new leap towards trying new things, I have taken a side gig as a wedding planner for a couple here in Chicago. I'll try to share details here and there, but likely it will all just come together in one large post-wedding recap.

But the more things change, the more they stay the same. I'm still seeking out roadside attractions, eating a clean and balanced diet, and spending every free moment with dem babies, who are now enormous.

I may be in a personal and creative rut, but a girls still gotta eat. This excuse was as good as any to get a 12 Lobster Rolls for $75 from Groupon that were surprisingly not gross in the slightest. (From the worst named restaurant, Da Lobsta in River North). And on the first cold, rainy day of fall, we took a trek down to Bridgeport for some fucking amazing pot pies from Pleasant House Bakery. (It's BYOB, so if you go, make sure to stop in Maria's next door first! If you eat meat, I highly recommend the Chicken Balti Pie.)

The Happy Show at the Cultural Center ended yesterday, but I've been really pleased with their exhibits lately. I actually found them through @PaulOctavious on Instagram, who I now follow solely to find cool shit to do in Chicago. I highly suggest following him for locals and non-locals alike. I've been trying to make a point to get out of Logan Square and see something new once in a while, because I am a creature of habit and need incentive. Though, to be fair, the second picture here is in Logan because I'm shitty at meeting simple expectations I set for myself.

And because some things always remain calm and good, Lucille Austero is still a perfect specimen of happiness.

What else?
  • I took a little road trip to Lawrence, Kansas (to see Andy's alma mater) and Kansas City, for another wedding. Not as many roadside attractions as on the way to Nashville, but still exciting because for the first time in five years, I am a licensed driver! I was very nervous taking my road test, but it went so well that at one point I had to tell the instructor to shut up because we were laughing so hard I couldn't concentrate on driving.
  • I've been watching New Girl nonstop after having resisted forever, and I cannot stop. I don't remember the last time a show really made me laugh out loud. I've also joined the masses of loving Nick Miller/ Jake Johnson (We both are from Chicago, dropped out of University of Iowa, and are into JC Brooks and the Uptown Sound, so naturally I think we should get married.)
  • I was on Buzzfeed again
  • I haven't made any progress on making my kitchen less ugly, but man you guys had some great suggestions so I really need to get on it.
  • I went and saw Willis Earl Beal (who you all need to check out), The Walkmen, Superchunk, Ted Leo & Aimee Mann, and am seeing Meat Puppets on Friday, with the next month holding Janelle Monae and Neutral Milk Hotel, so its at least been a good stretch for live music.
So that's all. Sorry I've been AWOL, and I'll try to come back to you more often. Funks and ruts are funny things.

xo,
z

  1. Speaking as someone who also doesn't really talk about feelings, it's totally fine to be a person who doesn't really talk about her feelings! You probably already know this, but it took me years to figure out that it's ok to just FEEL things and not vocalize 'em, even if people (especially female relatives) want you to. And that's about as much as I want to say about that, heh.

  2. You have been a busy lady! Sounds like you've been up to a ton of awesome stuff! Your music line-up is awesome. Ted Leo is one of my all-time favorites!

  3. I moved to Chicago a little over 2 months ago and have been trying to get out and explore on my days off - still need to see Logan Square. I've only heard cool things!

  5. I adored the Happiness Show as well! The underlying data was fascinating (albeit cherry-picked) and provided SO MUCH conversation material for a brunch we hosted the day after seeing the show. The cultural center is my jam. It's right next to where I work and after seeing a Vivian Maier exhibit there, I was hooked for good.

    Keep doing you, Meg. <3

  7. I didn't realize you dropped out of U of I, but I knew he did. I love that freaking show.

Hope things in your personal life start calming down. You've been super busy!

  8. I was just in Lawrence moving my sister in to college! I was really impressed by how beautiful the campus was. I mean, it's in Kansas. Rock Chalk Jayhawk!
