Easy Facelifts

Since we've only been fully moved into this apartment for about three months now, we are definitely still getting settled and figuring out what goes where, how to pull rooms together and all that crap. This weekend I added two small details I wanted to share with you guys.

First, this living room wall. The print and books look okay in pictures, but in real life they were kind of dwarfed on the walls and I wanted a bit more dimension. (Spoiler alert! You can see the shelves in the background here, waiting to be hung up.)

I guess I just use these shelves to display blog projects, because you can also see the golden bookends, the string art, and the unkillable terrarium.

It was a slight pain in the ass, because I had never worked with plastic anchors before, but the drywall was so soft that I had to.However, despite being soft, the anchors still would not go in all the way? Mysteries of life. Totally worth it though, because its nice to have some variety on the walls and to draw the eye upward. Plus, it gives me a place to display a lot of the crap that had been stashed in weird nooks of my apartment.

Next, I wanted to cover up these naked windows. One downside to city living is that your neighbors are, well, close. So not only are these curtains a nice finishing touch, the keep me from seeing my neighbors as naked as these windows, and vice versa. Everybody wins.

For $20 Ikea curtains, they get the job done. Something about me just loves curtains, I feel like they make everything feel warmer, more homey. Design blogs these days seem to be over them, but whatever, I've never been cool anyways.

Have you done any small upgrades to your space lately?

  1. My most recent apartment upgrade was huge and bulky and ugly and expensive: I paid three burly men $170 to haul away my horrible TRASH PIANO. Without that big dark squat bulk glowering across the apartment at us everything is so much bigger and brighter I can't believe it.

    1. I'm waiting until I redo that whole room! Right now it's blue & has all the daycare kid furniture in it but once I stop work I'm painting it pale green and getting a dining room table & chairs and some kinda sideboard in there and putting up all my homeless yes framed art. IT'S GONNA BE GREAT.

  2. both of these are a+! my next apt is going to be covered in shelves - they just make everything look more put together even if they're holding up a bunch of random crap.

    1. i LOVE shelves and how they look but ive learned i am very bad at hanging them without throwing a fit. haha i can never get them level or get the anchors in, even though it should be SO simple

  3. I am totally on the curtain bandwagon. I think they make a room look more finished and polished. Nice job!

    1. i love how you guys have yours hung! i wish i could find ones long enough to hit the floor in our apartment, since we have *slightly* higher ceilings!

  4. I'm sad you got rid of the book+ dog combo. I think I just miss the asymmetrically of it and would have been more happy if one of your shelves was 6-8" closer to the ground than the other. Not sure how practical that would be though. :)

    1. i havent been totally set on how these are hung, but i do think staggering them like that could be great!! originally i hung them side by side because i was going to put another set above them, but it ended up being a giant pain in the ass, so i never did haha. i love that staggering idea, i think i'll try that!

  5. Also, in case that comment didn't hint this: I'm living in your apartment vicariously through your blog. Ours is a dungeon.

I'm trying to figure out a little facelift for a pair of these ridiculous chalkware owl lamps. They have their original creme pleated shades and I HATE them, but I don't know what kind of shade I'd want to put on them.
